Paul Godden studied at art school for four years and has been a painter all his life. . In 2004 he decided to be more focused about the paintings he was producing and began to show. He shows work during the Brighton festival each year, has café shows throughout the year in and around Brighton and takes part in open exhibitions throughout Sussex.
He describes the paintings that he does as “Formal abstract expressionism”. He tends to work in series of paintings and over the course of a series develops a language within the paintings slowly increasing the degree of expression within them. Balance is a consistent theme throughout.
Since 2004 he has produced three series of paintings. The first was a series of paintings each of which is unique and none of them have any relationship with the others, these paintings explored themes such as balance, geometry, patterns, symbolism and natural forms. The second series of paintings referred to as "the Chimene series" were a series of Mandala’s meditating on the themes of love and loss, each of these paintings picked up from the last and a language developed throughout the series. The third series of paintings (currently under production) are best described by the term “Formal abstract expressionism” these paintings are the result of a process of deconstruction of the Chimene series and reconstruction using a formal but abstract approach.
